faded blogs!go-scarecrow.

if you're looking to make a layout, it's important that you have a place to put the text on it. by making a blog 'faded', you can make a clear space to arrange text, like in this:
I'm going to start with this image of Death Cab for Cutie

to save time, I've already added color adjustments and borders. you can use the same one to practice, or paste in your own.

what you'll first want to do is pick out the selection tool on your sidebar, and make sure it's set to just a selection

the drop-down on the left lets you pick from a variety of selection shapes (circles, squares, triangles, stars, etc...). for this one, I'm going to be using a rectangle. make sure the mode is set to 'add (shift)'. now, use the selection tool to left click and draw out the area you want to be faded.

once that's done, go to adjust - brightness/contrast, (shift+B). you can match your settings to mine, or toggle each of the numbers to get it right.

brightness is just how bright the selected area is. contrast has to do with the difference between dark and light. an image with a lot of contrast is very, very dramatic. high contrast makes the darks even darker and the lights even lighter.
now, to define the faded blog, you can add a border using the vector tool, and to swank it up, throw in some text, and you're done.
